Ford Performance und Drift-Champion Vaughn Gittin Jr., haben sich zusammengetan, um einen einzigartigen „Eagle Squadron Mustang GT“ zum Gedenken an den 100. Jahrestag der Royal Air Force für das diesjährige „The Gathering Fundraiser“ zu schaffen. Der Mustang wird auf der diesjährigen Auktion der „Experimental Aircraft Association“ am 26. Juli in Oshkosh, Wisconsin versteigert. Das Geld unterstützt junge Piloten der AirForce in ihrer Ausbildung.
Das diesjährige Build wurde von der „Eagle Squadron“ inspiriert, einer Gruppe freiwilliger US-Piloten, die im Zweiten Weltkrieg britische Kampfflugzeuge Seite an Seite unterstützen. Gittin, begleitet vom Royal Air Force Veteranen Paul Miller, dessen Vater “Dusty” in den Jahren 1941 und 1942 im Eagle Squadron diente, wird den 700 PS Mustang auf dem legendären Goodwood Festival of Speed fahren und zusammen mit Ford an diesem Wochenende erstmalig dem Publikum vorstellen.

“Die Unterstützung junger Piloten durch die Fundraising-Auktion der Experimental Aircraft Association spiegelt die Luftfahrtgeschichte von Ford wider, die auf die Anfänge des Unternehmens und den Kampf für die Demokratie während des Zweiten Weltkriegs zurückgeht”, sagte Darrell Behmer, Designchef von Ford Mustang. (Achtung lieber Leser: hier schwingt nationaler Pathos mit) “Der Eagle Squadron Mustang GT, der mit Vaughn und dem Ford-Designteam gebaut wurde, ist eine großartige Möglichkeit, unsere Helden zu ehren und den Geist der Luftfahrt für die nächste Generation amerikanischer Piloten lebendig zu halten.” (So, ich denke der Schwung verliert in den nächsten Zeilen ein bisschen den Drive ;-))
Alle Versteigerungserlöse werden an die Jugendausbildungsprogramme der Experimental Aircraft Association gespendet, die die nächste Pilotengeneration fördern und unterstützen. Bis heute hat Ford mit der Organisation zusammengearbeitet, um mehr als 3 Millionen Dollar zu sammeln.
Optisch umwerfend und unverkennbar aggressiv, der Eagle Squadron Mustang GT – eine wirklich bemerkenswerte Gestaltung, die zum ursprünglichen Eagle Squadron Spitfire Flugzeug passt – kennzeichnet Gittins RTR Mustang-Kohlefaser-Wide-body kit und schließt Frontkinnspoiler, oberes Gitter mit integrierter Beleuchtung, ein Gurney Spoiler passend zum Performance Pack Heckspoiler integriert. Diverse Aerodynamik-Gimmicks sind ebenfalls vorhanden.
Unter der Motorhaube powert ein Ford Performance Kompressor-Kit, das erstmals auf der SEMA Show 2017 vorgestellt wurde. Damit leistet der Ford 5,0-Liter-V8, 700 PS und 827 Nm. Drehmoment bei 12 psi Boost mit 93-Oktan-Kraftstoff. Der Motor wird mit einem Tremec 6-Gang-Schaltgetriebe kombiniert, wobei die Leistung über eine verbesserte Hochleistungs-Hinterachse, die ebenfalls von Ford Performance geliefert wird, auf die Straße gedrückt wird.
Ein RTR Tactical Performance Suspension Paket – mit verstellbaren MagneRide-Dämpfern im Fahrzeug, Ford Performance Tieferlegungsfedern und verstellbaren RTR-Stabilisatoren – erhöhen den Grip und die Seitenbeschleunigung. Gestaffelte RTR Aero 7 zweiteilige Schmiederäder mit 285/30-ZR20 vorne und 305/30-ZR20 hinten Nitto NT555 Reifen sorgen dafür, dass der Mustang auf dem Asphalt klebt.
Die maßgeschneiderte Lederausstattung verfügt über Recaro Rennsitze mit aufgesticktem Eagle Squadron Logo. Ein handgravierter Schaltknauf aus Metall, der von einem F-35 Lightning eingeschmolzen wird, trägt das Eagle Squadron-Logo, und ein 1: 1-Handgravur-Emblem aus echtem Spitfire-Aluminium ziert das Armaturenbrett.
“Neben seinem bedrohlichen Aussehen ahmt dieses kraftvolle und hungrige Tier die rohe Kraft und Manövrierbarkeit eines originalen Royal Air Force Kampfjets nach”, sagte Gittin. “Ich kann es kaum erwarten, den Gipfel in Goodwood zu besteigen.”
